Is the Quitline really free?

Yes. No matter where you are statewide, you can call our toll-free number and receive free coaching and support from the Quitline. The nicotine patches and gum and the mailing of any materials to you are also free. There is never a cost.

What is Web Coach™?

Along with your one-on-one phone sessions with a professionally trained Quit Coach, you can now access Web Coach™, an interactive website where you can:

- Track your progress
- Complete various exercises
- Update your Quit Plan
- Participate in discussion forums with Quit Coaches and others who are trying to quit

When can I talk with a Quit Coach?

The Hawaii Tobacco Quitline is open 7 days a week and Quit Coaches are available 24 hours a day. If calling on a standard holiday, the system will take your information and a Quit Coach will call you on the next available working day.

 

How often can I talk with a Quit Coach?

The Hawaii Tobacco Quitline is here to help you throughout the quitting process. Your Quit Coach will schedule calls at your convenience during this time. You may also call in whenever you would like a little extra support.

What are the hours of operation for the Hawaii Tobacco Quitline?

The Hawaii Tobacco Quitline is open 7 days a week. Monday through Sunday 3am-9pm. If you call at any other time, a registration specialist will take your information and have a Quit Coach call you back.

How will the Hawaii Tobacco Quitline help me quit?

What kind of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (nicotine patches/gum) will the Hawaii Tobacco Quitline provide?

The Hawaii Tobacco Quitline offers free nicotine replacement therapy (patches/gum) for smokers needing assistance. The following information explains the services available for callers:

Callers with private insurance can receive up to 2 weeks of free nicotine patches or gum (if needed).

Callers with Medicaid can receive up to 4 weeks free of nicotine patches or gum (if needed).

Callers with no insurance can receive up to 8 weeks of free nicotine patches or gum (if needed).

How long will it take to receive my patches/gum?

It should take about 2 weeks for you to receive your free patches or gum from the point you and your coach decide they are right for you. If you are planning to quit after two weeks, your coach may make plans to send you the patches right before your quit time. The nicotine patches or gum and the shipping are completely free.

What sort of person will I be talking to if I call?

All our Quit Coaches are very experienced at helping people over the phone. Each Quit Coach has completed comprehensive training in tobacco cessation and knows the latest methods to successfully quit tobacco. They are understanding and supportive because they know how hard it is to quit. They are never judgmental and they are here specifically to help you quit successfully.

Does The Quitline Provide Services in Languages other than English?

Yes. Currently, the Hawaii Tobacco Quitline has the ability to speak with people in English and Spanish and uses interpretive services for over 170 other languages.

Vietnamese, Chinese, or Korean speakers can call the Asian Smokers Quitline. This service is provided by the Medical School at the University of California in San Diego. By calling the appropriate number below you will receive a friendly staff member who will speak the language and be able to provide a choice of services, including: self-help materials, free nicotine patches, a referral list of other programs in your area, and one-on-one counseling over the phone.

Asian Smokers' Quitlines' Hours:
Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. - 6 p.m.
If you call after hours or if the lines are busy, you will reach the Quitlines' 24-hour voice mail service.

Do I get any materials as part of the program?

Yes, if you enroll in the Hawaii Tobacco Quitline, you will receive a printed Quit Guide that is relevant to where you are in the quitting process. The Quit Guide is full of information to help you get ready to quit, quit successfully and stay quit for good. It includes information on:

Making the decision to quit
How to get ready to quit
Knowing what to expect while you're quitting
How to cope with withdrawal symptoms and stress
How to ask friends, family and co-workers for support
How to avoid relapses

Will my call be kept confidential?

Absolutely, we comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) - the federal act that ensures privacy - and only keep information that is relevant to providing you quality service. We will never pass on any of your personal information to anyone else.

How is the Quitline funded?

The Hawaii Tobacco Quitline is being paid for by the Hawaii Tobacco Prevention & Control Trust Fund using funds that were received as part of a settlement with the tobacco industry.

Can I call if my partner, friend, or relative wants to quit?

Certainly, our Quit Coaches will be happy to share ways that you can help support your friend or family member become tobacco free.

Are there any other resources to help me quit?

Hawaii has over 30 programs that can help you quit that are free or cost very little. To find out what programs are close to you, visit the Other Programs section of this website.

What if I want to Quit On My Own?

If you're thinking about quitting tobacco on your own, visit www.smokefree.gov. This website has ways on how you can successfully quit tobacco, even if you don't get help.
