On this site you will find information on what is happening in tobacco prevention and control in Hawaii. Currently, we have information on each of the county laws regarding secondhand smoke and smoke-free workplaces, as well as materials created for their implementation.

The 1982 US Surgeon General’s Report states, "Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States." This statement is as true today as it was in 1982.

Tobacco has a huge impact on Hawai'i's health and economy. Tobacco is the most preventable cause of premature death and disease. Each year, smoking kills more people than Aids, murders, suicides, alcohol and drug abuse, car accidents, and fires combined. Annually in Hawaii, approximately 1,100 deaths (16% of resident deaths) are due to tobacco use.
