This is a train-the-trainer session and is a great opportunity to learn about the innovative program.

Each participant will receive a copy of the manual, which details this comprehensive program based on proven mental health treatment programs involving active participation in a treatment group by clients. Its eight sections contain all the material needed for each meeting of the group, both for the group facilitator-educator and for its members. It contains “how to” steps for quitting as well as scientifically supported factual material and resources. It recognizes not only the importance of individual and group support but also the importance of Nicotine Replacement Therapy as an integral part of a successful cessation program for a client.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. To understand the high prevalence and consequences of tobacco use in persons with mental illness.
  2. Identify the connection between smoking and mental health disorders in general including the biopsychosocial links between smoking and various mental health diagnoses.
  3. Explain the role of mental health professionals in treating tobacco dependence including how changes within the mental health systems will support the success of cessation attempts by individuals.
