Hawaii Tobacco Addiction

The Facts on Tobacco Addiction

1) Most smokers use tobacco because they are addicted to nicotine.

2) Addiction is characterized by compulsive drug-seeking and use, even in the face of negative health consequences, and tobacco use certainly fits the description.

3) It is well documented that most smokers identify tobacco as harmful and express a desire to reduce or stop using it, and nearly 35 million of them make a serious attempt to quit each year.

4) Unfortunately, less than 7 percent of those who try to quit on their own achieve more than 1 year of abstinence; most relapse within a few days of attempting to quit.

5) Tobacco is as addictive as heroin (as a mood & behavior altering agent).
Nicotine is:

  • 1000 X more potent than alcohol
  • 10-100 X more potent than barbiturates
  • 5-10 X more potent than cocaine or morphine

If you are a smoker and think you could be addicted to nicotine:
1. Decide whether or not you are ready to take a first step toward quitting.
2. Find a quit smoking program that works at your pace and with your situation.
3. Choose a close friend, family member, or Quit Coach to help you become independent from nicotine step by step.
